The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) detailed the likely impact of average temperature increases of 2 degrees or more, which are not bright at all. Namely, the climate change is negatively affecting food supplies, marine ecosystems, sea levels, extreme weather and economic growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Certain industries\u00a0 &#8211; utilities and manufacturing for example \u2013 have made significant contributions to cutting carbon emissions, albeit nudged towards these through stringent regulations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Google is powering its Iowa data centre facilities with up to 407 megawatts of 100% renewable wind energy. In addition to the wind power plants the search giant also supported development of technologies that make possible the utilization of solar energy and the \u201cgreen start-ups\u201d with significant amount of money in recent years, and it shows keen interest in biofuels research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But what about the others? We now work within a digital landscape, which environment was almost unrecognizable seven or eight years ago, when many companies started devising their environmental policies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-nsm-1-400\" src=\"http:\/\/felhoszolgaltatas-blog.hu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/shutterstock_37139764-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">IT systems usage worldwide now equals the carbon footprint of the global airline industry, each contributing around 2% the world\u2019s greenhouse gas emissions.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There\u2019s a whole lot more on the agenda now that we need to work into our policies, and that we just didn\u2019t need to worry about back then:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>1. Digital media \u2013 <\/strong>Every second, two new members join LinkedIn.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cio.co.uk\/insight\/compliance\/five-things-uk-cios-need-do-about-green-it\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">CIO magazine<\/span><\/a> points out that YouTube shares 6 billion hours of video a month, Facebook 20 billion minutes of usage per day, and between us we generate 140,000 tweets per second. \u201c<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>2. Data<\/strong> <strong>\u2013 <\/strong>90% of the data in the world today has been generated over the past two years. This isn\u2019t just content created socially. \u2018BIG DATA\u2019 and its management is a hot topic in private and public sector organisations alike \u2013 and one that wasn\u2019t on our agenda a few years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>3. Cloud computing<\/strong> \u2013 Cloud uptake is only going to increase, so we need to make sure we\u2019re creating sustainable infrastructure to cope with this \u2013 cloud computing, after all, needs data centres. Research by the Climate Group suggests energy consumption by data centres will account for 18% of the world\u2019s greenhouse gas emissions by 2020. Still virtualisation, shared use of facilities, and investment in sustainable, low-impact data centres can only be a good thing. In fact, <a href=\"http:\/\/newscenter.lbl.gov\/news-releases\/2013\/06\/11\/berkeley-lab-study-finds-moving-select-computer-services-to-the-cloud-promises-significant-energy-savings\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">research<\/span><\/a> has shown that moving certain business applications to the cloud can save up to 87% of IT energy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While making data centers more efficient and environmentally friendly would be a good solution, and while while it\u2019s great that Google look to invest \u20ac150m in sustainable data centres, most businesses don\u2019t have the resources to do the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>4. Mobility and devices<\/strong> \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vmware.com\/files\/pdf\/Forrester_2013_Mobile_Workforce_Adoption_Trends_Feb2013.pdf\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">29%<\/span><\/a> of the global workforce is classified as anytime, anywhere information workers, with the number continuing to rise as 905 million tablets are forecast to be used by 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Each year <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greeniacs.com\/GreeniacsArticles\/Consumer-Products\/Cell-Phones-and-the-Environment.html\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">4 mobile phones per second<\/span><\/a><\/strong> make their way into landfill in the U.S. alone, potentially leaking harmful materials into the environment. \u00a0And that\u2019s without the mass of defunct monitors, keyboards and handsets nesting in our offices, pushed aside for tablets and smartphones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The European Union the adoption of WEEE Directive (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive) considered as solution such e-waste mountains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Business leaders have a duty to bring \u2018Green IT\u2019 back to the board agenda and refresh policies, processes and commitments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It\u2019s time to recognise the part we play.
