Electric car maker, Tesla Motors will open up its patents “for the advancement of electric vehicle technology<\/em>,” CEO Elon Musk said on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The CEO wrote in his blog post: \u201cTesla will not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology<\/em>\u201d. At the beginning Tesla created patents out of concern that the big car companies would copy their technology and then use their massive manufacturing, sales and marketing power to overwhelm Tesla. According to Musk Tesla Motors was created to accelerate the advent of sustainable transport.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, Engadget first reported that Musk plans to encourage standardized electrical car specifications by opening Tesla’s Supercharger system to oth<\/span>er automakers. The Supercharger allows Tesla drivers to charge half the car’s battery life in about 20 minutes. Thursday’s announcement appeared to be much broader than just the charging stations, the move would include all current and future Tesla patents.<\/p>\n

“We believe that Tesla, other companies making electric cars, and the world would all benefit from a common, rapidly-evolving technology platform<\/em>,” he said in his blog.<\/p>\n

Investors should not worry about the decision hurting the company financially, Musk told reporters in a conference call.<\/p>\n

We might think that Musk made a crazy decision, since this kind of announcement not typical at all, but Musk’s goal is to spur electric vehicle development by his competitors. The theory is that if other automakers can piggyback on Tesla’s knowledge to build new models or technology that creates greater demand for electric cars, eventually Tesla will benefit by being able to sell more of its vehicles, and so the market of traditional cars could be reduced.<\/p>\n

Last year, just 96,000 electric vehicles were sold in the U.S., less than one percent of the industry’s total sales of 15.6 million vehicles, and because of this results Musk became disappointed, perhaps it also helped him to decide, since as we all know the CEO\u2019s main goal is with the electric cars the fight again climate change.<\/p>\n

The Tesla unveiled the Roadster in 2007 with a 250-mile battery range and it has been seven years, and there is no other electric car in production with that range level. That’s not great.<\/p>\n

As final words the CEO wrote in his post, that technology leadership is not defined by patents, which history has repeatedly shown to be small protection indeed against a determined competitor, but rather by the ability of a company to attract and motivate the world\u2019s most talented engineers. They believe that applying the open source philosophy to their patents will strengthen rather than diminish Tesla\u2019s position in this regard.<\/p>\n
