But what are the real costs and is there anything that can be done to avoid it?

IT pros have different definitions of the term “downtime.” This means “system unavailability.” Even though an application may be “up and running,” it is essentially “down” to a user if the application can’t be used, no matter what the reason.

There are varying degrees of system downtime, especially in a large networked environment. In addition, it’s possible for some technology services to be available while others are not available when applications are distributed over multiple servers within a company’s infrastructure.

With so many different variations, it makes sense to identify each technology component of significance and to develop a cost impact for each. Technologies typically fall into one of three categories:

Business applications are the applications that company employees use to do their primary job function. For example, accountants use a general ledger application, the billing department uses a billing and collections application, etc. Generally, business applications reside on a server that is accessed through the company’s network.

Technology services are applications that are made available to users to improve their productivity. Applications such as e-mail, Internet, and intranet services are included in this group.

Technology infrastructure includes the physical servers, networks, and communications capabilities of the company. Applications depend upon the infrastructure for users to gain access to them.

Downtime in any of the three groups of technology can have varying degrees of impact. But downtime can be costly. For the biggest web retailers such as Amazon, who reportedly had a turnover of just over $34 billion in 2010, if we make an assumption that traffic is uniform over a 24 hour period just 1 hour of downtime equates to $3.88 million in potential lost revenue alone. It’s not just lost sales that need to be considered. Downtime can lead to lost customer confidence or, worst of all, customers being forced to try out competitors and liking what they find.

Companies providing products or services which have few competitors, or don’t sell directly to customers over the internet, wouldn’t expect to see such direct dips in revenues during and after a website failure.

A third of websites experience downtime every month, and 90% of organizations have unexpectedly lost access to their critical systems. Website outages can last, on average, 7.9 hours in North America and 10.3 hours in Europe. For a society so dependent on connectivity such outages are extremely costly for organizations whose customers expect high availability anytime, anywhere.

To avoid these nightmares, is worth being sure that those protecting it are taking every possible precaution they can – using emergency power supplies, technologically advanced hardware stored in the highest security facilities, the backups of backups.

The infographic showed below compiled by Peer 1 Hosting outlines the true cost of website downtime, including the top five downtime disasters you never want to experience, including: damaged reputation, lost revenue, weakened loyalty, reduced productivity, and regulatory and compliance costs.

Source: www.cloudtweaks.com

With worldwide e-commerce on the rise year after year, experiencing website downtime can be an expensive problem for business.
