According to the latest news Google has just received municipal approval for the expansion of its data center in the capital city of Ireland, Dublin.
The new two-story data center will cost appx.150 million euros. In 2012, Google has established a similar data center in Dublin, which was a 75 million euros investment.
Google recently committed to expansions in Singapure and Taiwan. An interesting fact, that Google’s data centers in Taiwan are kept cool during the day thanks to ice made overnight. The thermal storage system will save Google money on electricity rates, which are generally expensive in Taiwan. A thermal storage system, the first of its kind for Google, balances the company’s energy needs during off-peak night hours, when electricity is cheaper, and during the day when there is more demand on the local grid. The cooling system is another reason why Google repeatedly ranks as a leading green information technology (IT) company.
Now Google is bumping up its Europe presence. The search giant wrote on a web page about the facility:
“We’ve always said we’re here for the long-term — and our data center further confirms this commitment”.
Otherwise, nobody knows the exact number of Google’s data centers, and the company isn’t saying. The conventional wisdom is that Google has dozens of data centers worldwide – at least 12 significant Google data centers are in the United Stated, at least five in Europe, and there are few in Asia, too. Google believes its data center operations give it a competitive advantage, so they say as little as possible about these facilities. They believe that details of its data centers could be valuable to competitors. This is the reason why is Google so secretive about its data centers.
